Pipe is bought by schedule, material and coating, and the three together decide almost everything about the price. A buyer comparing quotes in this trade is usually comparing quotes for different things without realising it: galvanised against black, seamless against welded, one schedule against the next one up. Ask for the standard the pipe is made to before you ask what it costs, because a quote that does not name one is a quote for whatever the supplier has in the yard. Lead time in this trade is about the yard rather than the factory. Common sizes in GI and black are held in Dubai and Sharjah and go out the same day; large diameters, heavy wall and lined pipe come on indent, and the honest suppliers say so at the quotation stage rather than at the delivery date. Cutting, threading and grooving are usually available at the yard, and it is worth asking, because a contractor who cuts on site pays for the offcuts twice. Delivery matters more here than in most trades. Six-metre lengths need a vehicle that can carry them and a site that can receive them, and a supplier who has done the route before will ask about access before they quote.
